Weaving Workshop concludes

To impart weaving and design skills to fashion and lifestyle
students, a six-day workshop “Tana-Bana” was organised at University Institute of
Fashion Technology at Panjab University by a senior faculty Ms. Anu H. Gupta.  The
inputs for the workshop were provided by the Weaver Service Centre, Panipat of the
Ministry of Textiles.  Two resource persons – Mr. K.N. Uniyal, a textile technologist
and Mr. Sammat Singh an expert weaver taught the students from the basics of practical
weaving to creative weaving.  Students learnt not only the operation of looms but also
the effects created by various types of weaves.  They experimented with a variety of
yarns and weaves and created beautiful fabric samples.
Shikha Dhir a final year student, inspired by this workshop, is planning to
develop products from the skills gained during the workshop.  “I will develop a Woolen
Stole for myself as winters are approaching” said Alpa.  Another final year student
Neha felt that the theory was equally interesting as practical and the queries related
to weaving were all sorted out in this workshop.
Dr. Sween, Coodinator of the Fashion Technology Department said “With such
workshops included in our curriculum, alongwith the apparel and home furnishing
industry, our students will be able to work with the Indian weaver in creating unique
lifestyle products”.
