NanoSciTech-2012 PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP

As a perfect prelude to the International Conference
on “Frontiers in Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Their Applications: NanoSciTech-
2012”, a Pre-Conference workshop was inaugurated today at Panjab University by the
Vice-Chancellor, Prof R C Sobti.
In his inaugural address, lauding the efforts of nanotechnologists in making nano-
based technologies accessible for serving the mankind better, Prof Sobti cautioned
against their rampant and indiscriminate use owing to problems like toxicity, cost,
etc.
Earlier in his introductory remarks, Prof Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, Convener of the
Conference Organizing Committee, welcomed the delegates, apprised them of the Workshop
schedule, and shared the preamble of the multi-disciplinary Conference.
In the first session, Prof Indu Pal Kaur presented an explicit talk on applications of
Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) as effective drug delivery systems. The next session
witnessed an explicit and exquisite presentation by Prof Ashim Mitra, Head, Deptt. of
Pharmaceutics, University of Missouri, USA, on the ways to enhance the cellular
permeability, retention and targeting of tailor-made pentablock co-polymeric
nanoparticles. Dr Ranjana Mitra, also from University of Missouri, USA, presented her
experience on nano-based approaches for targeting drug molecules to the ocular
tissues. In the post-lunch session, parallel hands-on training sessions were conducted
by Prof Keya Dharamvir on synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and Prof S K
Mehta on synthesis and characterization of copper nanoparticles. Also, practical
training was imparted on formulation strategies of nanoparticles for targeted drug
delivery.
