Padam Bhushan awardee and world renowned Mathematician, Prof R P Bambah conferred with the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa)

 

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Mr. Shivraj V Patil has congratulated the Panjab
University (PU), Chandigarh for maintaining name, fame and standard in India and the World.
Mr Patil was addressing the 63rd Annual Convocation of PU here today. As many as 682
students received Degrees, Medals & Prizes at the Convocation.


Padam Bhushan awardee and world renowned Mathematician, Prof R P Bambah was conferred
with the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) and eminent writer Prof Gurdial
Singh was honoured with the Degree of D.Litt. (Honoris Causa). Udyog Rattan was
conferred to Dr. Sukhdev and Dr. F C Kohli. Vigyan Rattan Award was conferred to Dr.
Nitya Anand and Dr. Girish Sahni.


As many as 244 students received Degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) at the function.
Out of them 95 were males and 149 were females.
First three candidates in each examination and subjects having obtained first division
were given Degrees at the Awards Function. 438 other faculty students received degrees
out of which 85 were males and 353 were females.


Mr Patil recalled the contribution of great Scientist and Professors who contributed to
the glory of the University. He also congratulated PU VC and PU Senate Members for
conferring ‘the degree of Doctor Science (Honaris Causa) on Prof. R.P. Bambah and the
degree of Doctor of Literature on Prof. Gurdial Singh and recognizing Dr. Girish Sahani
and Dr. Nitya Anand as the Vigyan Rattanas and Prof. Sukhdev and Dr. F.C. Kohli as the
Udyog Rattanas and honoring them’.
Mr Patil congratulated the students who were to receive their degrees in this
convocation. He said that though the students have received their degrees but their
learning process has not come to an end. He called upon them to keep learning throughout
their lives. “Because, the knowledge is unlimited, and what is learned by them in the
period of 25 years of their lives is only a part of what is required by them and what is
available in the world. If they keep learning, they would be able to do their duties in
the best possible manner throughout their lives”, he added.
Mr Patil described the mother as the first teacher. Besides teachers, Father, family
members, friends, companions, colleagues, electronic gadgets, books and media also
teaches you. He urged the students to learn good things from their own experiences in
life. He said that past is full of knowledge, present is also full of knowledge but the
future has great possibilities and challenges.
Addressing the students and welcoming the Punjab Governor, PU VC Prof Arun Kumar Grover
said that the year 2013-14 has been a momentous for the PU. The Times Higher Education
World University Rankings 2013-14, powered by Thompson Reuters placed P.U. in the
bracket of 226-250 best Universities in the World. PU obtained the highest rank amongst
all universities, IITs, NITs and the premier institutions who had participated in the
global survey in June, 2013. In December, 2013, Times Higher Education Survey for the
group of five BRICS nations, i.e. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa
alongwith twelve other emerging economies of the World placed P.U. at the 13th position,
the first two ranks in that survey were captured by Peking University Beijing and
Tsinglana University, Beijing. In February, 2014, the Associated Chamber of Commerce and
Industry of India, namely, ASSOCHAM adjudged P.U. Chandigarh as the Best Government
University of India for the year 2014.
Prof Grover said that three days ago the Times Higher Education World Reputation
Ranking, which uses a different recipe for categorization of World Universities, has
placed PU in the bracket 226-300. Only one Indian Institution got placed ahead of PU in
this latest release of rankings. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is the only
Indian Institution below the 200 rank, he further added.
PU Registrar Prof A K Bhandari, Controller of Examinations Prof Parvinder Singh, PU
Senate and Syndicate members, Deans, officers and large number of teachers and guests
also participated in the function.
