A national symposium on “Microbes in Industry and Health-2011” is
being organised by the department of microbiology of the Panjab University on March 4
in the Golden Jubilee hall on the campus.
Professor K.K. Bhutani, Director, NIPER, Mohali will be the chief guest, and
Professor Rakesh Tuli, Director, NABI, will deliver the inaugural address. This will
be followed by lectures from various eminent scientists in the field of education and
industry. Delegates participating in the symposium will be given talks on challenges
in vaccine design, drug design, HIV status and management, intellectual property
rights, applications of probiotic strains, employment avenues in the field of
Biotechnology etc.
Applications of microbes in industry and health are well known. Micro
organisms are being used for commercial production of alcohols, acids, fermented
foods, vitamins, medicines, enzymes. New strains of microbes have also been developed
using recombinant DNA technology for overproduction of metabolites. Extensive research
is being carried out at the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University catering to
the needs of industry and health.
