CHANDIGARH- March 24, 2011: Dr S.K. Biswas, former Director, KDMIPE at Oil and Natural
Gas Commission (ONGC), Dehradun shall deliver a special lecture on “Sedimentary Basin
Types, Basin Analysis, Petroleum Habitat and Indian Petroliferous Basins” on Friday,
March 25 at Geology Department of Panjab University (PU).

Dr Biswas has an extensive experience in R & D related activities of Indian
Petroleum exploration industry. During his career in ONGC, Biswas carried out several
foreign assignments including consultancy, technical cooperation/collaboration. He is
recognized as an authority on the geology of Indian sedimentary basins on which he has
several publications to his credit. He has been awarded life time achievement award
of the Association of Petroleum Geologists, India.
Prof Gurtek Singh, chairperson, department of Geology, PU informed that this
is the first lecture in the annual series of lectures instituted in the memory of Prof
I.C. Pande, who was one of the pioneers of this department and nurtured it as Head for
the logest term of eleven years. Professor Pande joined the department of Geology, PU
in 1964, ten years after doing his Ph.D. degree from Imperial College, London. He
steered the department at the early stages of implementation of CAS programme. He was
awarded the scroll of honour by the Wadia Institute of Himalaya Geology, Dehradun.
His contribution on the tectonics and structure of Himalaya, has made him authority on
Himalayan Geology. Prof. Gill informed that on this occasion, the first meeting of
Panjab University Geologist Alumni Association (PUGAA) shall be held to elect the
executive committee. In the evening, Pick and Hammer Club, a social organ of geology
students shall organise its annual function.
