The 40th Annual General Body Meeting and Scholarship Award
Function of Panjab University Alumni Association (PUAA) was held today in the Golden
Jubilee Hall at P.U. Campus.  Although this event is an annual one, it assumed special
significance in the light of the momentous headway made by the PUAA during last year.
The function was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor R.C. Sobti.
Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, Dean Alumni Relations and Secretary, PU Alumni
Association welcomed the guests and presented the Annual Report. In his report, Prof.
Bhoop highlighted the various activities and achievements of the department since last
year, especially holding the first ever Alumni Meet on the Panjab University Campus. All
the members thoroughly appreciated the endeavor of Department of Alumni Relations to
raise the number of  Life members to  444 including 17 overseas and  9 Patron members
crossing the mark well above of 4600.  He further informed that this year Rs. 45 lacs
were collected by the Department and 235 Photo Identity Cards of the PUAA members were
prepared. “The provision of online membership has also been initiated”, he added.  He
informed the House that the Department of Alumni Relations would shortly undertake the
construction of 24 more suites in the Alumni Guest House out of the funds collected by
the Alumni House. Also an immediate project on the anvil is the construction of Senior’s
Home (Old Age Home) for which Rs. 2 crores has already been sanctioned by Panjab University.
Another remarkable feature of the function was felicitation of all the former Dean
Alumni Relations including Prof. G.S. Gosal, Prof. H.S. Vashisht, Prof. Harkishan Singh,
Prof. M.M. Puri (former Vice-Chancellor), Prof. I.B.S. Passi, Prof. H.R. Pajni, Prof.
V.K. Bansal, Prof. M.L. Sharma, Prof. Tajinder Gill, and Prof. R.C. Sobti himself.
Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, Jt. Secretary-cum-Treasurer, presented the Audited Accounts for the
year 2009-10 and Budget estimates for Alumni House for the financial year 2011-12, which
were approved by the house.
A total of 52 meritorious students (27 each from the Colleges and 25 from University
departments) who had topped the respective disciplines of the Panjab University during
the academic session 2009-10 were awarded cash prizes worth Rs. 6500/- each,
complimentary Life Membership worth Rs. 1000/-,  Certificates of Merit and trophies.
Stipends to the 10 deserving pupils ranging between Rs. 3500/- to 10,000/- were also
awarded on need-cum-merit basis in academics or sports, out of the endowment funds (i.e.
Rs. 7.25 lacs) at hand with the Department.
Regarding election to the Executive Council of PUAA 2010-11, the Vice-Chancellor and
Dean were authorized by the general house to nominate the members.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. R. C. Sobti, in his presidential remarks, lauded the efforts
of PUAA and advised tangible ways to ameliorate the alumni affairs in Panjab University.
He accentuated the role that the Alumni can play in the development of the institutional
infrastructure, placement of outgoing students, their personality development to compete
and face the professional world in this cut-throat competition era and help in nurturing
the institute directly or indirectly.  The alma mater, on the other hand, can take care
of the alumni through various chivalrous projects while maintaining transparency as well
as accountability.  He shared the earnest endeavor of Panjab University in improving the
quality as well as accessibility of the education.  This could be possible through
alluring the aspirants to take up their unfinished education or doctoral research, and
permitting college lecturers to supervise Ph D’s.  On this occasion, he proposed the
endeavour of PUAA to hold the next Alumni meet of all those who have graduated from P.U.
on or before  1975 on 27 January 2012.  He also shared the headway made by PUAA towards
accomplishing the vision of Seniors’ home (i.e. Old Age Home) on Alumni House Campus and
asked to come forward to partake in such benevolent ventures of P.U.
Also, on the occasion, the next issue of PU Research Journal (Arts) was released.  The
editors, Prof. B.S. Ghuman and Prof. Sudhir Kumar, were also present.
Mr Subhash Chander Kohli, Vice-President, PUAA, gave away the concluding remarks and
proposed the vote of thanks.  Besides, the following resolutions were also unanimously
resolved:
i)     Modalities for awarding library membership to the PUAA members.
ii)     PUAA membership to all those who have passed any examination from Panjab University
other than graduation degree (like Matric, Giani, Prabhakar, Visharad, Pre-Medical,
Pre-engineering, etc.).
iii)     A member who would bring 25 or more alumni into the folds of PUAA would be duly
honoured at the AGM.
The entire function was meticulously compeered and conducted by Dr Mohanmeet Khosla,
Director Public Relations, P.U. and an Executive Councilor, PUAA.
