Panjab University is once again ready to refurbish its
long tradition of pursuing excellence in teaching and research in science and
technology with the organization of 52nd Annual conference of Association of
Microbiologists of India (AMI).
One of the oldest scientific communities of India, the AMI has been holding annual
conventions at different venues, with the aim of providing a common platform for
academicians, researchers, scientists and the students. This year the city beautiful
has been chosen to host the international conference with the theme, “Microbial
Biotechnology for Sustainable Development”.
A four day event, from November 3 to 6, 2011 will witness the congregation of eminent
microbiologists, biotechnologists and industries, not just from all over the country
but also from USA, Europe and neighbouring nations. The conference will be inaugurated
by chief guest Dr. D. Balasubramanian, Director of Research, LV Prasad Eye Institute,
Hyderabad, followed by parallel lecture series on the role of microbes and microbial
biotechnology in improving the quality of life in 21st century. What is urgently
needed is the exploration of new microbes, new technologies and novel genes for
solving some of the major challenges of the 21st century with particular reference to
sustainable agriculture, sustainable environment, sustainable alternative energy
sources and human health. Diverse topics ranging from industrial microbiology,
agricultural microbiology and molecular biology to nanotechnology, proteomics and
metabolomics will be discussed besides probiotics and drug resistance in microbes.
There will be a special workshop on scientific writing for the budding scientists to
hone their academic skills. Cultural events have been scheduled at the close of each
day in the evenings to appeal to the aesthetic tastes of the intelligentsia.
The enthusiasm for the conference can be appraised from the fact that there are around
fifteen hundred scientists and students participating. It is believed that the
conference will prove to be a milestone in exchange of scientific thoughts for meeting
the critical gap in basic research and solutions to environmental, agricultural and
health problems, Prof. Prince Sharma, Dept. of Microbiology, P.U. informed.
