CHANDIGARH: 02 November 2011: The Second day of the two day National Seminar on the
theme, “Women in India: Emerging Issues of Lives, Livelihoods and Sustainable
Development” comprised of thought provoking paper presentations in different stratas
of women and their livelihoods. The research papers ranged from Honour killings in
rural India, problems of married call center women employees, problem of differently
aged women and women’s empowerment programmes in hilly and remote regions of HP. The
panel discussion witnessed enriching proceedings: Bulbul Dhar James from Jamia Millia
Islamia, New Delhi discussed about the inter-relationships among occupational
displacement, role conflict and feminization of poverty in women’s livelihood. Prof.
Reicha Tanwar, Director, women’s Studies Research Centre, Kurukshetra discussed about
the different livelihoods of women in Kurukshetra district of Haryana. Prof. Sherry
Sabbarwal, Deptt of Sociology, PU inter-related the feminist theory with women’s
livelihoods starting from French revolution, liberal feminism, Marxist feminism,
socialist feminism, materialist discursive feminism. Prof. B.S. Ghuman, Chairperson of
Panel discussion emphasized upon the triangulation approach in conducting feminist
research and action research for women’s empowerment. In the valedictory session,
Prof. Rajesh Gill, Chairperson, Deptt. of Women’s Studies welcomed the participants.
Ms. Gurpreet Deo, IG Community Policing and NRI Affairs, Panjab stressed upon the
participants to be the changed agents which we want to see in our patriarchal society.
Prof. B.S. Brar, DUI, PU in his presidential remarks emphasized upon need for feminist
research on women’s livelihoods and sustainable development. Mr Rajesh K Chander,
Assistant Professor, proposed a vote of thanks.
