CHANDIGARH–January 25, 2012: For the first time, the Career Guidance and Counselling
Cell has been established in Panjab University under the UGC Plan. It also has a
Career Guidance and Counselling Student Committee that has been duly approved by the
Vice-Chancellor of the University. Oinam Anuradha, Career Counsellor, Panjab
University, the person behind the idea for the evolution of this committee stressed
that it provides a good platform for students to represent their career developmental
needs in their respective departments and fields. It facilitates the process of
planning and executing appropriate interventions that will address those needs. The
committee also serves the purpose of bringing a better or a more direct connection
between the cell and the student community. She vehemently believes that career
Guidance and Counselling Cell is established for the welfare of the students and it is
the students’ right to be involved in the activities of the cell.
Currently the committee has volunteers from 12 out of the 75 departments in the
University. The number is expected to increase as the existing volunteers plan to make
use of social networking sites and other forms of media to create awareness.
Irrespective of the figure, it is believed that with the evolution of such a
committee, the Career Guidance and Counselling Cell will be able to give more inputs
for the career development of the students.
The current members of the committee range from students pursuing their graduation to
Ph.D scholars. The first meeting of the committee has already been held and
Ms. Anuradha, the Career Counsellor intends to channelize the energy and talent of
these volunteers. Most of them are socially-oriented, active & vibrant. These
qualities would be utilized to the best of their fellow student community. The
Committee’s target is to organize various activities and programmes, and innovate
other creative mediums to achieve a common goal. She further added, “Any innovative
idea will always be welcomed. Besides contributing to their community, the
involvement of students should also enhance the personality and skills of the
volunteers in the form of an unshakable confidence, planning and organizing skills,
creative mind, leadership, team spirit etc. The students will be given a certificate
for their volunteer work and a testimonial will be given to the deserving ones.”
