National seminar on ‘Economic Development and Inclusive Growth in India

 

CHANDIGARH: February 15, 2012: The Dept. of Economics, Panjab University, organized a
national seminar on ‘Economic Development and Inclusive Growth in India on 14th of
Feb.  The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. G.K. Chadha, President, South Asian
University, New Delhi and Prof. S.S. Johl, former Vice-Chairman, Punjab Planning Board
delivered the keynote address. Prof. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University
presided over the inaugural session. The seminar was widely attended by participants
from Punjab, J&K, U.P. and Andhra Pradesh and nearly 30 papers were presented in 4
technical sessions according to the UGC-SAP Coordinator, Prof. Upinder Sawhney.
Prof. G.K. Chadha highlighted that though the Indian economy is the second fastest
growing economy in the world, we are at the tail end in terms of Human Development
indices and therefore the growth process is not inclusive. Prof. R.C. Sobti emphasized
that the lack of quality education and health services is encouraging ‘exclusion’ in
our country. Prof. Johl emphasized that the absence of structural reforms will never
bring about inclusive growth.
Prof. B.S. Brar, DUI, presided over the valedictory function and Prof. B.S. Ghuman,
Dean, Faculty of Arts delivered the valedictory address.
