Human Rights Day Celebrations at PU: Call to end discrimination

 


Centre for Human Rights and Duties of University Institute of
Emerging Areas in Social Sciences (UIEASS), Panjab University commenced celebrations
of Human Rights Week to commemorate the International Human Rights Day today on the
University campus. The theme of the week coincides with the UN theme of the
Day, “Speak up Stop Discrimination: Human Rights Defenders who act to end
discrimination.”

The first day of the week-long celebrations organized at the centre witnessed a talk
by Professor Pam Rajput, Fellow and Dean, Faculty of Arts on the issue of gender
discrimination and the role being played by the defenders of women’s human rights.
Prof. Rajput congratulated the Centre for organizing the event. She paid tribute to
women who lobbied hard to include sex as one of the grounds of non-discrimination in
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was originally missing in the draft
Declaration. She also paid tribute to human rights defenders in various parts of the
world. While discussing the international, national and the local scenario she
motivated all those who were present there to stand up for the rights of others. She
emphasized the need to adopt non- confrontationist strategies to protect and promote
human rights. The talk was followed by screening of a documentary titled ‘Ghuti hawaon
ka Sanatta’ on Eve Teasing to sensitize the students about the issue. The occasion was
also graced by the presence of Prof. S. K. Sharma besides Chairpersons and faculty of
other departments and Centres of University. Earlier Dr. Swarnjit Kaur, Coordinator
Centre for Human Rights and Duties introducing the theme, highlighted the role played
by the Vice Chancellor Professor R.C. Sobti in introducing masters’ course in human
rights and later setting up the Centre along with other centres as parts of the
University Institute of Emerging Areas in Social Sciences.
