Republic Day celebrated at Panjab University
Jan 26, 2012, Chandigarh: The 64th Republic Day was celebrated with fervor and enthusiasm at the Panjab University campus here today. The ceremonious hoisting of the National Flag by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. A.K. Grover was followed by the inspection of the Guard of Honour comprising the contingents of Panjab University Security Staff, Ankur School and Guru Gobind Singh Vidya Mandir, Ratwara Sahib.
Focusing on the significance of Republic Day, Prof. Grover drew upon history to highlight the additional importance that this day holds for Panjab University. He said, “The transition from East Panjab University to Panjab University happened on the first Republic Day, January 26, 1950. Thus it is also a day of rebirth for our University.” Sharing his vision for the Panjab University as a Vice Chancellor, Prof Grover said, “I believe the Vice Chancellor ought to provide leadership that continues to build upon its strength while at the same time protecting its competitiveness.” Detailing further, he said the practice of hosting a monthly Colloquia series has been initiated as also Annual Foundation Day Public Lectures and expository lectures delivered by eminent personalities from within and outside the university system, not to mention “regular departmental seminars and monthly meetings of chairpersons of all departments to increase inter departmental programs.”
Envisioning a bright future for the University, Prof. Grover said, “We are also working on a proposal to solicit additional funding to the tune of Rs. 300 crores spanning over five years that is likely to be made available by the UGC for the Innovation Universities. The new initiatives are expected to improve the academic atmosphere at our campus and spur young people to remain focused and hopeful.”
The Republic Day celebrations were also an occasion to felicitate meritorious employees. Sh. Vijay Kumar, Restorer (UIET) was awarded a cash prize, commendation certificate and a memento in recognition of his act of bravery in nabbing a thief red-handed while stealing the bags of students. Sh Jai Bhagwan, Head Constable and Sh. Nand Kishore, Constable, Police Beat Box, Panjab University, were awarded for their zeal in ensuring peaceful Student Council elections.
A colourful cultural program drew the celebrations to a close. The students of Music Department, Panjab University enthralled the audience with patriotic songs while it was the vibrant Ganesh Vandana by the students of Ankur School kept them glued to their seats. The group dance presented by the students of Ankur School was a unique combination of gymnastics and dance on the patriotic lyrics that enticed the audience. A scintillating Bhangra performance by girl students from Guru Gobind Singh Vidya Mandir, Sr. Sec.School, Ratwara Sahib added just the right energetic touch. { General} |
