Seminar on role of teacher

 


 A national seminar-cum-workshop on “The Role of Teacher in
Knowledge Society” was organized by the University School of Open Learning, political
science department, on the Panjab University campus here today.

Sponsored by “The Salvation Army, India” Northern Territory, New Delhi, about 45
participants from Kolkata, Moradabad, Delhi, Braeilly, Gurdaspur and Batala
participated in the seminar. Prof. A. S. Ahluwalia, Dean Faculty of Sciences was the
chief guest. He defined the role of teacher in the society. A good teacher, he said,
should take care of all the problems of the students and be dedicated towards his
profession. The teacher, he said, needed not be afraid of his evaluation if he did his
work consciously.  Education was a big investment for the people because well educated
people had more opportunity to get jobs which gave them satisfaction. He said that
right to education was a fundamental right and positive step for the sustainable
development of our society.

Dr. Jasvir Kaur Chahal, Dean Faculty of Education, in her keynote address,
pondered over the problems of the modern education system. She said that 21st century
was a “knowledge age” and the role of teacher in this knowledge age was under debate.
She listed the features of knowledge age as information overloaded, closed society,
worrisome individuals with double standards moving away from self with lack of
awareness despite having knowledge.

Professor Harish Sharma in his presidential remarks deliberated upon ‘Human Being’ in
knowledge society. He emphasized on ‘what we are’, ‘what am i’, and ‘how can I chistle
the mind of society’ so that knowledge society become enlightened society.

Dr. Emanual Nahar, Director Seminar, Introduced the main theme of the seminar,  
visualised to bring into the focus on the importance of education in the 21st
century.  
Dr. Navleen and Dr. Jatinder Grover were the co-ordinators of the seminar. Major
Tarsem Masin, Secretary Education, Salvation Army, India Northern Territory, New
Delhi, proposed the vote of thanks, informed Dr. Emanual Nahar, Director, USOL,
Department of Political Science of the University.
