Special lectures held on Punjabi Language in the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies.
CHANDIGARH 14th February, 2013:- Two Special Lectures were held by Department of Guru
Nanak Sikh Studies. P.U., Chandigarh on February 14,2013 on the subject of
Morphological Study of Punjabi Language by Dr. Updesh Kaur, Professor & Former
Chairperson of Punjabi Department of Jammu University and on Verse Technique of
Punjabi Language by Dr. Iqbal Singh Dhillon Ex. Director Youth Welfare, Panjab
University and a well-known linguist, literary critic and poet .
While speaking on the first topic Dr. Updesh Kaur stressed on the inflectional
Morphology of Punjabi Language. She has discussed Noun and verbal inflection of Pahari
speech form of Panjabi Language spoken in Jammu Kashmir. She also expressed how the
study of linguistic is important for the study of both literature and language. She
emphasized that today the study of undeveloped and unexplored form of Punjabi language
is very important so she gave main stress to work on such type of Punjabi speech forms
promoting & developing of Punjabi language which will create interest in the mind of
new researchers. Porf. Jaspal Kaur Kaang, Chairperson of the department thanked the
speaker for her valuable ideas. Prof. Pushpinder Syal and many other scholars amongst
the participants also discussed the need of studying language and Linguistics with the
speaker.
In the afternoon session Prof. Iqbal Singh Dhillon Spoke on the topic, Verse Technique
of Punjabi Language. During his lecture Dr. Dhillon described the significance of the
versification in poetry in general and drew a contrast between various verse
techniques such as pingal of Sanskrit. Arooz of Persian, Prosody of English. He
explained that Panjabi too has a verse technique of Pingal and Arooz. He presented the
outline of Phonological Verse Technique of Punjabi which he has himself has
identified, codified and presented through his book ‘Punjabi Chhand Shastar’ published
in 2002 A.D. Dr. Dhillon explained how right from the beginning, Panjabi Poets have
been indirectly using Phonological Technique for verse construction at the level of
lines giving the Pingal names to stanza forms. He claimed that the Phonological Verse
Technique of Punjabi is the most scientific verse technique of the world languages and
advocated that Punajbi Poets should come forward to adopt it for verse construction in
all the forms including Ghazals.
A lively inter-action took place during questions raised by the audience. The event
was presided over by Professor Pushpinder Kaur Syal, Deptt. of English, She stressed
on the need of such type of technical lectures to be delivered regularly so that the
students do not develop and fear for them. Dr. Jaspal Kaur Kaang, Chairperson of
Department and Senator of P.U., thanked all the audience. There were a large on number
of teachers from university and outside colleges along with the research scholars who
attended the lecture.
