CHANDIGARH: December 14: A week long training workshop on “Quantitative Data Analysis
in Social Science Research” began today at the North-Western Regional Centre Complex
of the ICSSR. This comes in the wake of the earlier basic training workshop
on “Quantitative Methods and Techniques in Social Sciences” organized by the Centre.
About 25 young teachers and research scholars from the region are participating in the
workshop.
Professor Bhupinder Brar, Honorary Director of the Regional Centre and Dean University
Instruction, Panjab University, welcomed the participants. He highlighted the
importance of such training workshops in social science research. He mentioned that
there is a need to understand how numbers are used in analyzing social realities.
To address the tremendous demand from scholars from the region, the ICSSR North-
Western Regional Centre organizes two workshops in a year. The session began with
a brief information of the participants and a detailed over view of the programme.
Dr. Kailash K.K. pointed out that sound original research is impossible without
analysis of the data. There are powerful but intricates software packages like SPSS
that young scholars must learn to use. He also emphasized that scholars should
learn to use data judiciously. Dr. Swarn Singh delivered the lecture on the Use of
SPSS in Social Science Research.
Dr. Pampa Mukherjee and Dr. Kailaksh K.K. of Panjab University are the Course Co-
coordinators of this workshop. The resource for this workshop have been drawn from
Panjab University, J.N.U. New Delhi and the CSDS, New Delhi.
