Department of Political Science organised a refresher course

 

Department of Political Science organised a refresher course in social sciences on behalf of the ASC, Panjab University during 30 November to 20 December. Forty Eight Assistant Professors from the Colleges and University from as many as 11 states attended the course. The outside resource persons from diverse social sciences disciplines included Professors K Sivaramakrishnan, SS Gill, PS Judge, Ujjwal Singh, Sudha Wasan, Amit Prakash, Gopal Guru, Surinder Jodhka, Sudha Pai, N K Dogra, Sanjay Kumar and M N Thakur. Professor Ashutosh Kumar coordinated the course on behalf of the department.

In his valedictory lecture Prof Shelly Walia, Director, ASC spoke about the need to evolve social sciences in a manner that it can be not only relevant but also transformative in nature. The social sciences teachers should take moral responsibility to not allow themselves to be mentally colonized and mere recipients of the western theoretical explanatory frameworks. Criticality in social sciences is imperative to make social sciences interventionary in nature. 

 

Prof Bhupinder Brar, DUI, PU underlined the critical need to evolve indigenous social sciences that can explicate the complexities of a large and diverse society like India.  Borrowed concepts need to be discarded in favour of original social sciences. Prof BS Ghumman, Dean, Arts emphasized over the need to undertake field research in social sciences.

Dr Kuldeep Kaur presented the valedictory report. Professor Ashutosh Kumar presented the formal vote of thanks, Dr Ronki Ram formally welcomed the participants and the resource persons present on the occasion.
