Former Panjab University (PU) Dean University Instructions and Professor Emeritus at
Department of Geography, PU, Prof Gurdev Singh Gosal today passed away.
Condolence meeting was organised today at the University Auditorium, where the demise
was mourned by the faculty, staff and students of the Department. PU Vice-Chancellor
Prof Arun Kumar Grover, Registrar Prof. AK Bhandari and senior officers of the
University also participated in the condolence meeting. Rich tributes were paid to the
memory of the departed soul and his contributions to the field of Geography and the
Department were remembered.
On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover
placed on record the extreme distress at the irreparable loss. He prayed to the Almighty
to give strength to the bereaved family for bearing this huge loss. He read out a
condolence message conveying the feeling of the entire PU family. Two minute silence was
also observed in memory of the departed soul.
Born on April 1, 1927 in village Goslan of district Ropar, Punjab, Prof Gosal did his
Masters in Geography from Panjab University (Lahore) and M.S., Ph.D., from Wisconsin,
USA. He began teaching at Government College, Ludhiana, Punjab in 1950 and joined the
Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh on April 24, 1959 and retired
from this Department on March 31, 1987. He was a doyen of Geography who as a stalwart,
straddled the lofty heights of academics. His contribution to Geography and its
development in particular, and to academics in general, is exemplary.
Prof Gosal headed the Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh for a
considerable length of time and it was an innings which brought laurels to the
department. He also held prestigious posts in Panjab University including Dean
University Instruction, Dean College Development Council and Dean Student Welfare. He
also headed the North Western Regional Centre of ICSSR in capacity of Honorary Director.
The cremation was held today at Cremation Ground, Sector 25, Chandigarh.
