A workshop on High Performance Computing concluded today at the Department of Physics, Panjab University (PU).

The two day workshop was organised on March 16 and 17. As many as 65 participants from various parts of the country attended the prestigious workshop.

Expert lectures, hands-on sessions and demonstrations were performed by experts from PU as well as from NABI Mohali, CDAC Mohali, CDAC Pune, IIT Ropar, HPU, UIET, NPL Delhi and NITTR, Chandigarh. This is the third such workshop, which was organized by the PU Department of Physics.

The Workshop was an effort towards generating awareness and motivation among the researchers from Sciences and Engineering, about utilizing the computing facilities in an efficient and productive manner.

The department has a high performance computing cluster which turns out a whopping 1.3 TeraFLOPS of computational power. This facility is used by the faculty and research scholars of the department for their research analysis. A GPU based cluster, named as GeeHive, developed locally, was launched during this workshop. Participants were made to do hands-on exercises on this cluster.

The workshop sessions were streamed live over the internet using the indigenously setup web conferencing server (based on open-source tools), named FlashCat. Remote participants connected to the workshop from Fermilab, USA and CERN, Geneva are using this facility.

Earlier, the workshop was declared open by the Dean Faculty of Science, Prof. Naresh Tuli and was chaired by Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Navdeep Goyal.
