Panjab University today honoured Mr Sukh Dhaliwal, MP, Newton-
Delta, Canada, at a gala function organized at the University campus (Golden Jubilee
Hall). Welcoming Mr Dhaliwal, Prof Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, Dean Alumni Relations, PU,
highlighted his diverse political and social accomplishments of the “son of the
Punjabi soil” as an MP in Canada and even otherwise. He exhorted Mr Dhaliwal and other
NRIs at the helm of the overseas affairs to come up in a big way to foster liaison
between alumni and alma mater.
Mr Sukh Dhaliwal, while nostalgically remembering his student days, expressed in
heartfelt words his earnest desire to help his alma mater and his country. In
particular, he lauded the endeavors of Department of Alumni Affairs in the
establishment of scholarships for meritorious students, endowment stipends, Alumni
Guest House, and plans to rehabilitate elder alumni at proposed Seniors’ (Old Age)
Home. Taking himself as a person made by the people and for the people, he asked one
and all to do whatever they can for their country, rather expecting everything from
her. Referring India as a superpower, he pressed upon making Punjab an important part
of this revolution by improving education, healthcare and industry in the state.
Particularly, he emphasized that higher preference and incentives for education ought
to be imparted to the people from rural area, who constitute nearly 65% of Indian
populace, while representing only 5% in higher education. He was honored with a
Distinguished Alumnus Award, trophy and a robe of honor by the functionaries of
University.
Mr GK Chatrath, Dean, Faculty of Laws and Syndic, PU, advised the NRI’s to send their
wards to PU and other universities to act as ambassadors to fortify the liaison of
immigrants with their mother land.
During this occasion, the establishment of a PU Alumni chapter was also declared in
British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Mr Amrao S Kaler, also from Canada, was honored
on the occasion for his stellar contributions in establishing a PU Alumni chapter in
British Columbia, who handed over the draft of membership to Dean, Alumni Relations.
Mr Gurinder S Attari, President, High Court Bar Association also welcomed Mr Sukh and
spoke on the occasion.
Also present on the occasion were Prof Shashi Sharma, Dean Research, Prof Ajaib Singh,
Director, Department of Life Long Learning, and Prof Deepak Kapoor, Dean Management
(all from Panjab University), and Ms Anu Chathrath, former Mayor, Chandigarh.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Dayal Partap Singh Randhawa, Fellow, PU, who
organized the entire felicitation function meticulously for
Mr Dhaliwal.
