The second Winter School on the theme “Current Trends in
Pharmaceutical Analysis and Medicinal Chemistry” commenced today at University
Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) on the Panjab University (PU) campus for
candidates opting for research career, Ph. D. and PG students, teachers under the UGC
networking programme.
Fifteen entry-level faculty members, representing 10 different states of India with
teaching experience upto five years, have been selected from various pharmacy colleges
across the country. Eminent scientists from pharmaceutical industry will be training
these faculty participants on the current trends in pharmaceutical analysis and
medicinal chemistry during the week long deliberations, said the Coordinator UGC
Training School, Dr Renu Chadha.
The programme was inaugurated by Professor Saranjit Singh, Dean, NIPER, Mohali at the
Golden Jubilee conference hall of Panjab University. He was also the chief guest on
the occasion. In his inaugural address, he informed the participants about the various
newer and futuristic aspects of pharmaceutical analysis and updated their knowledge in
this area.
During the days’ proceedings, Dr Deonarain Dikshit, head quality function, RANBAXY
Labs Ltd., Paonta Sahib, H.P. described the analytical advances in the impurity
profiling of drugs, which are now employed in all stages of drug discovery.
Prof. Tejvir Singh of department of chemistry, PU, in the afternoon session,
highlighted the significance of infrared spectroscopy in pharmaceutical analysis and
Professor A. Raghuram Rao, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, UIPS, PU enlightened the
participants on the mass spectral methods.
